Video Marketing – An Edge Above The Competition

Have you ever thought about creating a marketing video for your business? Many business owners have thought about creating a video or two and probably have in the past. Most have a very positive experience with it. When a video is done right it is one of the most powerful ways to impact your audience. More and more consumers are turning to video as their preferred method of being marketed to. They are more likely to watch something than read something (which should say quite a bit about our culture).

Telling A Story

I remember the first time I ever watch a YouTube video. I was a junior in high school (we won’t say when) getting ready for prom with my boys (which consisted of playing basketball by the garage until 5 minutes before we had to leave) when my good friend called me into the house to watch something. “hey man, this video is hilarious! Check it out.” I had no idea you could watch videos on the internet so I sat down.

I saw a large man in a computer chair raving his arm to the words, “Numa Numa Ye, Numa Numa Numa Ye.” I was hooked. We then watched about 3 hours of Strong Bad  and Home Star Runner. These were the “good ol days” before the social platforms were overrun with ads and marketing. But the fact that there was a time when these things didn’t include ads should tell you something.

Why Video Works

Take a look around you. It seems like the world is changing right before our eyes. Everyday we add another piece of technology to the way we live. With that shift comes a difference in how people interact with their world. Since the invention of YouTube in 2005 (ref) video consumption on the internet has skyrocketed and isn’t going away anytime soon.  Check out some of these stats by WordStream

  • One-third of online activity is spent watching video.
  • 85% of the US internet audience watches videos online.
  • 45% of people watch more than an hour of Facebook or YouTube videos a week.
  • More than 500 million hours of videos are watched on YouTube each day.
  • More video content is uploaded in 30 days than the major U.S. television networks have created in 30 years.
  • 87% of online marketers use video content
  • 92 percent of mobile video viewers share videos with others.
  • 51% of marketing professionals worldwide name video as the type of content with the best ROI.

With factors like these there is an obvious reason why video marketing should be a part of your strategy.  A single video becomes a shareable asset that reaches a much broader audience base than any other form of marketing if done correctly. It does a better job of drawing people into the story of the brand and the product and helps them visualize the benefits.

Beating Your Competition

Here’s the kicker. Only 33% of businesses are using video as a primary delivery method for their services. This gives those who see the value in video a tremendous leg up on their competitors. Creating a marketing campaign with video can be easy or difficult. It depends on the approach. Some businesses try to save some money by doing it themselves.

Others see the value in investing an exorbitant amount for a large video marketing firm to shoot their material. I personally recommend finding an agency that can create high quality videos on a smaller budget. You don’t have to be all fancy schmancy to be effective. The main point is to understand how video works in your market and who else is using it. Then get started doing it for yourself and take advantage of he trend before your the only one without a video.
